FAQ about Cacao Ceremonies
What is Cacao?
Cacao is the seed from the fruit of the Tehobroma cacao tree, which is native to Central and South America. It is also known as “the chocolate bean”.
Cacao has been used in ceremonial contexts for centuries. Cacao has been used as far back as 1900 BC (although arguably longer) by the ancestors of Central America, the Olmec people and then was used spiritual medicine by the Aztec and Mayan cultures.
What is a Cacao Ceremony?
A ceremony is a sacred time and space to welcome and create a deeper spiritual and meditative experience. Ceremonies take us outside of our everyday and into a liminal space; they are created by our highest intentions. Ceremonies are moments to allow our hearts, souls, higher selves, Spirit and the natural world to speak to us.
In this Cacao ceremony we will work with Cacao in a sacred manner with the intention of opening our hearts and connecting to love. We will use a plant spirit healing approach and language, a shamanic practice of greeting and working with plants as living beings, inviting their wisdom and healing to speak. A Cacao ceremony is a unique opportunity to form an intimate and lasting bond to this beautiful plant and all of her medicine.
What is Plant Spirit Healing?
Plant Spirit Healing is a shamanic practice of working directly with the consciousness and healing properties of a plant being. This healing works on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual body to enhance our wellbeing, self-awareness, and connection to our soul selves.
What does the ceremonial Cacao contain? Is there any caffeine?
Our ceremonial Cacao elixirs contain: Cacao (raw), coconut milk, water, honey, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and rose.
There is no caffeine in Cacao. There is an alkaloid called theobromine, which has a similar structure to caffeine. Theobromine is mildly stimulating.
Precautions for Working with Cacao:
In a cacao ceremony a concentrated and higher dosage of cacao is consumed. Cacao is a powerful stimulant and less is more when working with Cacao in ceremony. Cacao, like all plants, act uniquely in each person’s body so be mindful of your constitution when consuming cacao.
Ideally you should allow yourself a gentle rest of your day after the ceremony – some people have very deep experiences and need time to integrate and digest the ceremony.
You will need to avoid caffeine on the day and alcohol the night before.
If any of the below apply to you, you will need to let us know before the ceremony so we can adjust the amount of cacao for you.
- Are on anti-depressants
- Having chemotherapy
- Are pregnant
- Follow a 100% raw food diet
